Tire Services South Austin
At Dave’s Ultimate Automotive in Austin, Texas, we believe proper tire service and maintenance is key to the life of your tires. Have you looked at your tires lately? Do you know if the tread is deep enough? Are your tires inflated properly or is there uneven wear? These are all things you need to take notice of on a regular basis. Having your tires in good condition can not only save you money by increasing your fuel efficiency but, also keep you from replacing them more often than necessary due to uneven wear. If you don’t properly maintain your tires they will wear out faster than necessary. You can avoid collisions and costly replacement tires by following a few simple tire service guidelines.
Tire Maintenance is Very Important
Tire Tread Depth: The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 millimeters or 2/23 of an inch. There are many ways to check the depth of your tire tread. The most widely known, is the penny test. You take a penny and turn it upside down. Insert the upside down penny into the tread of your tire. If you can see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head, then you need to replace your tires. When your tread is low, you run the risk of hydroplaning, long stopping distances, and reduced grip of the road. The penny test is good way to estimate your tread for tire service. Unless you live in an area where you encounter wet road conditions often; then tire tread is suggested to be 4/32 of an inch (3.2mm) deep.
Age of Tire: It is suggested that if your tires are more than five years old then they should be examined by a professional tire specialist. This is to make sure the tires are still in good driving condition. Older tires run the risk of separation, bulges, cracks, and splits in the tread and sidewall areas. These can lead to steady loss of pressure or possibly a blowout.
Tire Rotation: Tire rotation is essential to proper tire maintenance and can preserve traction, handling, and even out tire wear. It can even improve performance when done regularly. Tires should be rotated regularly even if they don’t show signs of wear. We suggest having your tires rotated every time you get an oil change. Proper tire service is important to ensure even wear for all four tires on your car. If you don’t have them rotated when you have an oil change, it is suggested you have your tires rotated at least every 4,000 to 6,000 miles.
